The flag of Switzerland shows a white cross in the middle of a square red arena. The white cross is recognized as the Swiss cross. Switzerland Flag arms are regular, and their ratio of distance to width is 7:6. The size of the cross in relative to the turf was set in 2017 as 5:8. The white cross has been used as the arena sign of the Old Swiss Confederacy since its creation in the late 13th or early 14th century.

As a national pennant, it was first applied in 1800 during the Hundred Days by general Niklaus Franz von Bachmann, and as strict flag of all cantonal crowds from 1841. Flag of Switzerland the federal coat of arms was clear in 1815 for the Restored Confederacy as the white-on-red Swiss cross in a heraldic protection. The present design was used composed with a cross calm of five squares until 1889, when its sizes were formally set.

History of Switzerland Flag

Many Swiss militaries helped in the imperial army as well as in their individual cantons. Schwyz, one of the original three confederated regions that shaped the core of the modern Swiss Confederation, located a thin white cross in the higher hoist corner of its red flag in 1240. More overall use of that symbol by the Swiss confederates can be old-fashioned back to 1339 and the Battle of Laupen.

Throughout the 19th century the regions of Switzerland developed more closely linked and, following acceptance of the 1848 constitution, a square red flag with a white cross was formally recognized for the army. The national flag on land shadowed, being legally recognized on December 12, 1889. Lastly, the necessity of clearly classifying Swiss flags on the Rhine River and away during World War II led to the implementation of the Swiss civil ensign at sea on April 9, 1941.

Switzerland Flag Design and Symbolic Meaning

White Cross representation was designated by the Swiss Federal Council in 1889 as on behalf of "at the same the Christian cross character and the field sign of the Old Confederacy". The Swiss cross is distinct as "a white, upright, free-standing cross portrayed against a red contextual, whose arms, which are all of equal size, are one-sixth lengthier than they are wide."
