The flag of Saint Kitts and Nevis contains of a yellow-edged black stripe landscaping two white stars that divides slantwise from the lower hoist-side angle, with a green top triangle and red bottom triangle. Approved in 1983 to substitute the flag of Saint Christopher-Nevis-Anguilla, it has been the flag of the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis meanwhile the country achieved independence that year. Although the Saint Kitts and Nevis Flag utilizes the colors of the Pan-Africanist movement, the symbolism behindhand them is interpreted differently.
The three islands later developed in to parts of the West Indies Federation in 1958; after this dissolved four years later, they were decided the status of subordinate state as Saint Christopher-Nevis-Anguilla. This was finally formalized in 1980, and a new Flag of Saint Kitts and Nevis for the residual parts of the federation was wanted, since the symbolism of the preceding flag centred on the idea of a union of three.
The Saint Kitts and Nevis Coat of Arms shows the motto "Country Above Self". The center of the coat of arms is conquered by a shield, at the vile of which is a ship. Above that is a red chevron tinted by two poinciana plants, and at the top of the protection is the head of a Carib indian. About the Carib indian is the fleur-de-lis and a rose. The Caribs were the initial inhabitants of the isles, and the fleur-de-lis and rose mean the English and the French effects. A helmet outdid with a tower seems with a flaming torch supported by the hands of an African, European, and a person of mixed ancestry.
The colors and symbols of the flag transmit cultural, political, and local meanings. The green refers to the country's lush land, while the red suggests the fight for freedom in contradiction of slavery and colonialism. The yellow bands signify the sunshine the islands enjoy all year round, and the black epitomizes the people's African roots. The two stars on the black band symbolize hope and liberty. The official meaning late the flag's symbols was formulated by Edris Lewis.
