The flag is a version of the captivating entry from Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi in a competition held in 1959. A 23-year-old student had designed the flag. He was student of Norwich Technical College, who submitted the design of a new national Nigeria flag.
The original submission Flag of Nigeria had a red burning sun badge in the central white vertical stripe with a green perpendicular band on each side. After the badge was detached by the judges, the flag has continued unchanged. It was first formally used on 1 October 1960, the day Nigeria was settled independence from the United Kingdom.
From the late 17th century, the British agreed on slave trade with native conditions and ultimately acquired territories over many of them. These regions hadn’t their own national flags, and the variety of ethnic groups and faiths meant that there were no common ciphers for the area. A more multifaceted design might have clearly honored some ethnic and religious groups while excluding others.
