The flag of Libya was initially presented in 1951, succeeding the formation of the Kingdom of Libya. Libya Flag was originated by Omar Faiek Shennib and accepted by King Idris Al Senussi.
The flag was not in use in 1969, however, Flag of Libya was later adopted by the National Transitional Council and anti-Gaddafi forces and reinstated successfully as the Libya’s national flag. This time, the national flag was taken under article 3 of the Libyan Draft Constitutional Charter issued on 3 August 2011.
The flag of the Kingdom of Libya was accepted when Libya achieved full freedom in 1951. It features of a white star and semicircular on a triband red-black-green design, with the dominant black stripe being twice the width of the outside bands. The design was formed on the banner of the Senussi dynasty from Cyrenaica that consisted of a black field and star and crescent design. The flag was later used as the flag of the area.
According to Omar Faiek Shennib, red was chosen for the blood forewent for the autonomy of Libya, black to recall the dark days that Libyans and green to signify its main wealth, agriculture, and the future affluence of the nation. The star and crescent were located within the black central strip of the flag as an orientation to the Senussi flag and the role of King Idris in foremost the nation to independence.
The diverse colors in the Libyan flag signify the diverse regions of the nation. The red color characterizes the Fezzan region of the republic, the black stances for Cyrenaica part of the land, while the green color embodies the Tripolitania region of the country.
The crescent depicts for the Islam which is the main religion in the country. The semicircular also symbolizes the lunar month in the Islamic calendar, which rendering to Islam is a reminder of the epic journey of Hijra of Prophet Muhammad.
The star is a representation of the smiling hope of the people of Libya, the light and the loveliness in their trust in God, and integrity that brightens the way and ends the darkness.
