Flag of Liberia

The flag of Liberia was adopted on July 26, 1847. Liberian flag has related color red and white bands, and Blue Square with a white star in the region.

The number of bands was abridged to 11, representing the number of men who employed the Liberian Declaration of Freedom. The flag was first flown on August 24, 1847, celebrated as Flag Day. However, the flag was retained after the annexation of Maryland in 1857. Despite its resemblance to the flag of United States, the government has made no modification to the flag of Liberia.

History of Liberia Flag

The American Colonization Society was recognized in 1816 by Abolitionists who touched that unfettered slaves should be assisted in chronic to Africa. Land was obtained from local communities on the West African shore, and the colony started there came to be recognized as Liberia, from the Latin word liber (“free”). The slow growth of the territory and population of Liberia led to its gaining of a distinctive flag on April 9, 1827. The U.S. flag was the root for the design, which had 13 identical flat red and white bands and a blue region bearing a single white cross. Another colony was recognized close by the Maryland Colonization Society and was identified as Maryland. It had a alike flag, with bands of yellow and white that remembered colors in the coat of arms of the U.S. state of Maryland.

Local freedmen announced the independence of Liberia on July 26, 1847. A national flag was desirable, and a committee of women was made accountable for its design. They relieved a star for the cross, representing Liberia’s status as the only sovereign Western-style state in Africa.
