The national flag of Ireland regularly referred to as the Irish tricolor. Ireland Flag is the national flag and pennant of the Republic of Ireland. The flag itself is a perpendicular tricolor of green, white and orange. The sizes of the flag are 1:2, flown horizontally; the flag is half as high as it is wide. Obtained as a gift in 1848 to Thomas Francis Meagher from a minor group of French women understanding to the Irish cause, Flag of Ireland was proposed to represent the addition and hoped-for union between Roman Catholics and Protestants, the meaning of the colors drew from white in the center indicates a lasting truce between Orange and Green.

History of Ireland Flag

An amount of official and unsanctioned flags over the periods have been hovered in Ireland. One of the first, in usage in the late 15th century, was blue with a gold harp; nowadays it is the presidential standard of Ireland. In the 17th era the Cross of St. Patrick—later combined into the British Union Jack—was extensively employed. White with a red slanting cross, it was connected both with the family weapons of the Fitzgerald’s and with the Spanish Cross of Burgundy.

In the 19th century numerous tricolor flags and streamers came to be representative of Irish nationalism. Many of them comprised the colors green, orange, and white. The first known vertical tricolor flag of orange-white-green dated from March 1848. The tricolor in its contemporary form (green-white-orange) was documented by the constitution on December 29, 1937, and was not transformed when the Republic of Ireland over its contribution in the British Commonwealth on April 18, 1949. It is often wrongly asserted that the third band is yellow or gold rather than orange.

Ireland Flag Design and Symbolic Meaning

The green pale of the flag represents Roman Catholics; the orange signifies the minority Protestants. It was comprised of the Irish flag in an effort to settle the Orange Order in Ireland with the Irish individuality movement. The white in the center indicates a lasting peace and hope for amalgamation between Protestants and Catholics in Ireland.
