In 1803, Haitians detached the white band from the Tricolor, and the new blue-red flag, signifying the black and mulatto of populations remained.

After the revolution of Emperor Faustin-Élie Soulouque in 1859, Haiti came under the blue-red flag until Franc̦ois (“Papa Doc”) Duvalier. On February 25 the old blue-red flag was reintroduced along with the coat of arms comprised of palm tree overcame by a liberty cap and bordered by flags, rifles, hatchets, cannon, anchors, mast, and other symbols.
