Flag of Gambia

The national flag of the Gambia contains of three flat red, blue and green stripes parted by two thin white fimbriations. Approved in 1965 to substitute the British Blue Ensign defaced with the arms of the Gambia Colony and Protectorate, Gambia Flag has been the flag of the Republic of the Gambia subsequently the country attained independence that year. It remained unaffected throughout the Gambia's seven-year association with Senegal.

The British Parliament’s Colonial Naval Defence Act of 1865 delivered that the British Blue Ensign would be “defaced” by an insignia for each government subdivision or colony creation use of it. These characteristic ensigns became de facto national flags even earlier the colonies realized independence. In the case of Flag of Gambia the badge in enquiry was a yellow disk bearing an elephant and palm tree in natural colors.

History of Gambia Flag

Flag of the Gambia Colony and Protectorate (1889–1965). The British initially visited the modern-day Gambia in 1661, when they occupied James Island. They proceeded to concept forts around the meeting of the Gambia River with the Atlantic Ocean, and slowly prolonged their control upstream. This area converted a protectorate in the 1820s under the authority of Sierra Leone, and finally emerged as a discrete crown colony of the United Kingdom within its colonial empire in 1888.

The Gambia was achieved its self-governance in 1963. The defaced blue pennant continued to be used until full individuality in 1965. The winning design for the novel flag was shaped by an accountant. It was first hoisted at night on February 18, 1965, the day the Gambia developed to an independent country. In 1982, the Gambia shaped an association with Senegal, which continued for seven years before its dissolution in 1989.
