On May 8, 1990, the Estonia flag was formally accepted by the unitary parliamentary republic. The color blue signifies loyalty, and the country's lovely blue skies, seas and lakes. The color black in Estonia flag represents the past domination and the fertile soil, and white signifies virtue, winter snows, and Estonia's long struggle for freedom and independence.
Estonia's coat of arms is an excellent shield, surrounded by oak branches, with three blue lions loaded on top of each other. The first of the three lions means the courage in the fight for independence during early times, the second for revolts in Harjumaa, and the third fight for freedom during modern times. The oak branches characterize perseverance and strength.
When the Soviet Union engrossed Estonia in 1940, the blue-black-white flag was forbidden, but most Estonians resented the following imposition of Soviet Red Banner designs. Thus, with the undoing of Soviet controls in the 1980s, the Estonian government documented the old blue-black-white colors on June 23, 1988. The flag itself was readopted on October 20 that year, and it wholly replaced the Soviet Estonian flag on May 8, 1990. Memory of the 1918–40 flag had been kept flourishing by Estonians in exile in Sweden, the United States, and elsewhere.
A symbolic-interpretation made for the flag colors explain that blue is for the vaulted blue sky, the black for attachment to the soil. In addition, other colors means homeland as well as the fate of Estonians — for periods black with doubts and white for cleanliness, hard work, and commitment.
