The flag of Bulgaria is comprises of tricolor equal-sized horizontal bands of white at the top, green at the center and red at the bottom. Bulgaria Flag was adopted during the period of 1877 to 1878 Russo-Turkish War. Later, Bulgaria gained its independence.
April 16, 1879, the Bulgarian Flag got its official recognition having tricolor band of white-green-red. When the communists came to power, they modified the design of the flag by adding their coat of arms, with its red star and other socialist symbols. After the downfall of the communist government, the old plain tricolor was regenerated.
Since 1878 to 1991, there have been several modifications made by the ruling government. The Bulgaria's flag went through various additions such as the Russo-Turkish War in 1878; the flag consists of white, green and red colors, placed horizontally. Also, there was emblem of the People's Republic of Bulgaria was located on the left side of the white stripe. Further, the flag of Bulgaria also contained a lion within a wreath of wheat ears below a red star and above a ribbon. Today, the new Constitution of Bulgaria has approved Bulgarian flag having tricolor color which is white at the top, green at the mid and red at the bottom.

The white signifies for peace and prosperity, whereas the green depicts agricultural and wealth and red is for the independence struggle and military courage. Yet, the national flag was resultant from a dissimilar source—the ethnic connotation of Bulgarians with their Slavic brothers the Russians. The Russian flat tricolor of white-blue-red was modified in the Bulgarian flag by the replacement of blue for green.
